Two years ago my mother was going through treatments for breast cancer. She was tested for the BRCA1 gene mutation and it came back positive. My sister and I were also tested since it is genetic, and are both are positive as well.
Since then, I got cervical cancer at age 33 and had to have a hysterectomy. Also, a double mastectomy with reconstruction is recommended as a preventive measure against getting cancer since my odds are around 85%. I have this surgery on Monday and then several months later they will complete my reconstruction. It's a long process.
I received my first Giving Key yesterday from one of my best friends with the word STRENGTH on it. She told me she has always admired my STRENGTH and attitude through all of this.
I will wear it always to remember that I am strong and that I can do this!
