My Story
This is my Niece Olivia, last September she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Olivia and I share a special bond, she was born on my 29th Birthday and is my first niece. I wanted to do a special project for her for her 1 year Anniversary of being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. So I started looking on the internet for photo inspiration of pictures of children with Type 1. I found all of 5-6 photos!!! I knew then that as a Photographer I was going to start a personal project to bring awareness to this childhood disease!
In the last 350 days... Olivia has had 1,902 finger pokes, 1,206 shots of insulin, 273 days on the CGM with 39 insertions, 153 days on the pump with 51 pump site changes. and approx. 7,000 units of insulin... She is not even at her year yet. 35010:00 AM days that she has not slept through the night, her sugars have to be checked up to 3 times a night. Her parents literally have to be her Pancreas.
Type 1 Diabetes is not from obesity, nor can it be controlled with diet. These children did nothing to get it, its just who they are and makes them uniquely THEM!
I was hunting for Olivias 8th birthday present one day and came across the COURAGE key, my heart FLEW with joy, Olivia deserves this key more than anyone I know! She is the most COURAGEOUS KID I know. Heck the most COURAGEOUS PERSON I know!
I hope through my photography to create a journey of photographs showing all different children of different ages with Type 1 Diabetes. I only wish I had a Courage key to give each child I photographed so they could ALL know how COURAGEOUS I truly think they are!
