Exactly What I Needed

Exactly What I Needed

My key says STRENGTH and has been with me through some of the most difficult times in my life. In 2018, I was admitted into the hospital with what was thought was a stroke. The whole right side of my body went numb. When the hospital diagnosed that it wasn't a stroke, they passed me on to the general neurology team and I was kept overnight to make sure nothing more was wrong. The next day I was taken to the Intensive Care Unit. I had started having seizures. Four weeks later I woke up not knowing what had happened. According to the doctors, my body went into a critical state and even the neurologists weren't sure that I was going to be able to make it out alive, and if I did they were scared that I would have lots of damage. I learned that I had been put on a paralyzer, sedatives, and had been put in a medically induced coma. Four weeks later I woke up with what felt like a million tubes and IVs attached to my body. I spent another three weeks still at the hospital, which overlapped with my 22nd birthday. When a group of my friends came to visit me in the hospital for my birthday, they gave me a Giving Key with the word STRENGTH. The key was exactly what I needed at the time. My body had physically gone through so much stress without me realizing it, and I still couldn’t fully understand what had happened.  The key was a constant reminder that I had the STRENGTH to persevere through the long recovery process that lay ahead. In May of 2018, I was discharged from the hospital.  I'm now able to walk on my own and do my own self care, amongst many other things. It'll still be a challenge to do a lot, but I'm progressing each and every day. Day by day, I'm starting to unravel the big question mark left in my mind about those 4 weeks. I just want to thank my amazing friends and family who were the best support group even though I wasn't aware of it for a good part of the time. The love, kindness and positive energy from people is what I swear helped to me pull through. To the neurologists at the hospital, thank you for not giving up on me and for literally saving my life. There are no words to express my gratitude. - Mary
