My Story
"Peace". I suddenly lost my mom to cancer when I was 27. Life was amazing, best friends literally.. & in a split second my life turned upside down.. my mom passed away in my arms locking eyes & saying our goodbyes, I had never seen death nor ever experienced such pain.
I grew a very close relationship with my Dad in that passing moment. Finding myself again. He wasn't around when I was growing up. He was a Veteran who traveled the world so we began to write & talk long distance. Everyday I would come home to a letter in the mail/box at the door always a rose bush to plant in memory of my mom.
He told me he was staying in a hotel for awhile, during the summer months the heat was too brutal. I got married. Welcomed a daughter. He was beyond excited to have a granddaughter & my letters never stopped but the boxes at the door were now her boxes.
Everyday she was excited to see the box at the door.. & helping me plant a diff rose bush in memory of her Nana..at 3 years old she sat down to write her popa a letter back about Halloween tomorrow night - the next day I mailed the letter.
I got call from a detective asking me to come identify my Dads body & the autopsy will take 90 days before I will know what happened to him...they found his body Halloween night in a parking lot is all they would tell me. I went to talk to the locals that knew him for help while I waited on results.
I learned that he was a homeless Veteran...everyone knew him & his routine.. he would have never told me that nor ask me for help. The thought of sending me packages & letters everyday & yet homeless.
Veterans try to come back & find their ways - Your life can change in a split second. Daily routine upside down & your shattered glass of a soul you now have to place back together & make something beautiful ..a true piece of art...Gentle humble smile to every stranger.
I know everyone is going through something..my own pay it forward everyday in anyway that I can!! & at PEACE that he's no longer on the hot brutal summer streets homeless.
