Amongst the chaos of our own lives, it is hard to stay in constant contact with friends (even if they are merely a few miles away). I knew that I would stay in touch with one of my best friends, even 9 years after I moved thousands of miles away from her.
This friend, unfortunately, had struggled through the sudden death of a mother at the age of 3. Now, at the age of 16 and after being raised by a stepmom for most of her life, she was devastated when finding out that this new mom had been diagnosed with cancer. On March 8th, within her mother's final hours, I gave my "strength" key to this friend. Most would say it was because I wanted her to stay strong through a difficult time. Although this is 100% the case, it was for this reason I gave her the key: she is the epitome of strength and to remind her that she is without a doubt, one of the most emotionally strong people that this world has yet to see. Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes we all just need to be reminded.
